We were contacted initially by the wife of a man in his early 60’s who had recently been diagnosed as suffering from a malignant mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a particularly aggressive and unpleasant form of Cancer which is caused by exposure to asbestos.
After initially discussing matters with her and establishing that her husband did indeed have a history of exposure to asbestos, mainly in local Shipyards and Chemical industries we arranged to discuss matters with him, taking full details as to his work history and in respect of all the potential financial losses.
Although we had a confirmed diagnosis of Mesothelioma it was nevertheless necessary for us to obtain a medico-legal report from an expert respiratory surgeon.
We obtained a report from a well-known expert in Newcastle, who confirmed the diagnosis and that the condition was unfortunately likely to cause death within the next 9 to 12 months.
We then set about directing the claim against his previous employers, identifying their insurers, and eventually negotiating a satisfactory settlement which not only enabled the client to enjoy his remaining months, but also enabled his wife to enjoy a measure of financial security once he had passed on.
The couple enjoyed their dream holiday of a world cruise, but unfortunately upon their return, his condition deteriorated rapidly, and he died within a few months.
After his death we received a particularly touching letter from his widow who expressed her thanks and appreciation for all that we had done for both herself and her family, explaining and emphasising how the compensation had enabled her to support him throughout his final few months, making essential alterations to their home and making his final weeks and days very much more comfortable.
